The first shelf is general fiction, with a lot of McSweeney's titles and magazines, etc.., then nonfiction, art books, some miscellaneous.
The second shelf, the one with multiple titles, is the overflow shelf for extra Pyr books. I try to keep three of every title there (but am already full and need to relocate these soon).
Then SF&F runs alphabetically through the four shelves on the right. (Individual Pyr books are also mixed in there, it being important to see them in context to the history of SF&F, shelved alongside the other books of those authors we work with who have books with other houses too, etc..., right? Beyond that, out of the picture, is a glass cabinet full of Batmobiles.
Not pictured are three more shelves on the left (making three walls of a square), where we have graphic novels, SF&F anthologies, a run of Virgin's Doctor Who novels, and mystery (including a Sherlock Holmes shelf).
I have many times designed ideal libraries in my head, and they look almost exactly like that! I even cobbled together something in Lively that was vaguely similar, before they torpedoed the service...
Thanks Rick, Erin. Erin, what is Lively? Also, I actually started with 8 shelves in a row with the sliding ladder running the whole way, but one too many problems with the sink/dishwasher overhead and I decided to move the shelves out of the danger zone.
Suddenly I feel very humble. However, our challenge is finding space for the books we have. At last count, between the two of us, I think we have upward of 3,000.
Thank you all. Even KatG. I think. And no, no Wheel of Time or Song of Ice and Fire. Do have the entire White Wolf Eternal Champion books in hardcover (including the Jerry Cornelius one only released in the UK), and their Lankhmar quartet. Those are pride and joys, as is the entire paperback run of Taran with the Neal Adams and Boris Vallejo covers.
May I move in? I could easily spend the rest of my life in there.
BTW - I still have 404 boxes of packed books from our move from Portland to Seattle and probably another 50 from our last move in May 2008. All the books currently in my home have been bought since May 2008. I'm afraid to count them though.
It was meant as a compliment. I missed the comment about the sink and the dishwasher the first time, so clearly you have converted your entire home into book shelves, of which we all of course approve.
No, no, the sink & dishwasher are overhead. They erupted one night, forcing me to move 4 shelves out of harms way, and transforming my L-shaped bookshelves into a three-sided space. Unfortunately, that means the ladder doesnt slide as far as it used to!
