Cowboys and Trotskys and Golems, Oh My!

Recently, I was asked by an old friend and new editor at the Believer if I had any interest in writing for them. Now, it's been a few years since I made my living as a journalist, but as it turns out, The Believer is one of my all-time favorite magazines, and so I said that I would if and only if I could interview one of my all-time favorite authors. The piece that resulted appears in their April 2005 issue, on stands everywhere this week, but it's also been posted to their website. So, with fair warning that it contains some minor spoilers, here is a piece of journalism that I'm as proud of as anything I've ever done, my interview with China MiƩville.

Very glad you enjoyed it. The original interview was around 10,000 words and we (my editor at Believer Eric Spitznagel) and I edited it down to its current length (under 5,000) over a few grueling and painful days! My only quibble is that they axed the line about China being voted "sexiest man in British politics" during his run for MP from my introduction, which sort of sets up the humor of the jealousy vibe a little more clearly. But overall I'm very happy with the piece, as apparently are they. It was fun to be back in journalism again, and I am planning on occasional forays in future.

Fascinating interview with Mieville. He is certainly one of the more interesting young writers working today. Any chance of your posting the full length pre-edit version of the interview? I know many fans of Mieville's would appreciate it.

Thanks, Ash.
I'll probably do so one day, but not yet. I want to give the Believer a year with it. Also, China and I passed it back and forth a few times, and it'd take a little work to make sure the entire pre-edited interview still met with his and my approval. Time I need to spend on other things!
