I tend to think all fiction reading serves this purpose: to take us to places we never been. That purpose in turn serves a dual function, to escape and enlighten (or expand). Even in the fluffiest of fiction, there is something to learn.
Yes, but … of course it is. Escapist, i mean. That's what it's all about. Every literature is. "Expanding" … huhuu… that's psychobabbel. A bit geeky, don't you think?
