From Fast Forward 2:
"The Kindness of Strangers" by Nancy Kress, short story
"Catherine Drewe", Paul Cornell, novelette *
"An Eligible Boy", Ian McDonald, novelette
"The Gambler", Paolo Bacigalupi, novelette
"True Names" by Benjamin Rosenbaum & Cory Doctorow, novella
* Note that "Catherine Drewe" is technically a short-story, as it lists at 6,674 words. Don't know why it's listed here as a novelette, but very happy to see it being recommended either way.
From Sideways in Crime:
- "The Blood of Peter Francisco" by Paul Park, short story
- "Sacrifice"by Mary Rosenblum, novelette
Congratulations to all those receiving recommendations. 2008 was a great year. On to 2009!

I'm just honoured to have been included.
I just got my Locus in the mail today! It's interesting the way they divided up the sf list and fantasy list - I'm not sure I agree with the 2 books I read that they put in the fantasy list however. The other lists were interesting also.
A great magazine, imho!
I am anxious for a half hour of free time when I can read the recommendations and other data straight through. I just skimmed it, and was glad to see The Quiet War get so many mentions.
Just to clarify for your readers as well as ours, "Catherine Drewe" was listed as a novella because Locus uses the six-character word count as a standard for the short fiction list, as explained here: http://www.sfwa.org/writing/wordcount.htm.
By this count, Catherine Drewe came in well above 7,500 words.
Congrats on hitting the list so many times, Lou!
Hey Liza,
Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated. I'm just glad it made the list and appreciate you stopping by.
