Over on Tor.com, art director Irene Gallo has just posted "Todd Lockwood's Stormcaller, from Sketch to Finish" a very in-depth breakdown of the evolution of the cover for our forthcoming title, The Stormcaller: Book One of the Twilight Reign,by Tom Lloyd. This was my first time working with Lockwood - whose art I had admired for years - and I was blown away by the result. (He's just recently delivered the artwork for book two, btw, though that will have to wait for another day...)
Meanwhile, with quotes from Yours Truly and a LOT of commentary from Lockwood himself, and 20 different sketches, roughs and detailed close-ups, the post is well worth checking out.
The book is also well worth checking out, which you can do here.

I've loved the series of the evolution of cover art over there. It's fascinating to see how it develops, and how that's different from artist to artist.
It's interesting the way he builds it digitally as though it were an oil painting. The end result idsjust gorgeous. The detail of the lightning strike through the membrane of the dragon's wing delights me every time I look at it. Actually, the lighting overall is wonderful.
idsjust = is just, of course.
I love the shot that leads Irene's post where it's pencils in the lower left and fully painted in the upper right - like a band of force is moving across a 2D world and bringing it to life...
This was a fascinating post!
Many thanks to you and todd for sharing and explaining the process as it evolved.
I am amazed by all the stages that Todd so generously shared.
